i haven't seen any good bucks yet, just a few small ones. lots of does and fawns though. haven't gotten any shots yet either. just a bit out of range each time. i'll probably get out this evening.
Been out 3 times so far. Not alot of activity in the morning but the evenings have been pretty busy. Had 12 does around my stand 3 nights ago. Cant wait to start seeing the big boys. Got a nice 13 point on my trail camera the first day of the season. Showed up around 8:30pm. If I knew how to add pictures to my post I could put it on. Can anyone help..
i use photobucket to upload and copy and paste the URL (like the one below) to my post and then all you have to do is click on it in my post. Photobucket is free. Getting ready to go out now
my neighbor screwed up my sit last night. i had a big doe at 50 yds. and closing in when he drove back near the field at 7 pm and started throwing stuff into his truck bed. all 10 deer in the field high tailed it to the far end and into the woods.
One of my buddys shot a moster 22 points that scored 201 1/2 about 5 days ago hes 16 years old and he wasnt sitting in the stand an hour and it walk under him about 20 yards he shot it at 7:30 in the morning.
Thanks, now if he will just out during the daylight and say hello. Yes, that is a homemade gravity feeder. Holds just under 50 lbs of corn. Works very well and is alot less expensive than an automatic. Just trying to keep the hot does in the area. I fill it about every 4 days in August and September and then they just keep coming even if it is empty.
look at post #4 and you will be able to make a link to the pictures. Have you clicked on any of the links above? I'm not sure how to post them on the forum.
I've been out several times and have had quite a bit of activity in the evenings but the mornings have been pretty slow. It's all been does so far but I'm trying to hold out for this buck that I've been watching on trail cam on my property all summer. Here's a pic.
OK ohiofirelt, clue all of us in on how to post the pic on the forum. The only way that I'm able to post anything is a link. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Ok, it's pretty easy. First upload your pic to a hosting site. I use photobucket. Then after you use the reply button, right above the box you reply into is a series of icons, one looks like a tree. That's the insert/edit image button. Click that and a insert image or URL box comes up. When you go to the hosting site and find the pic you want to use just right click on it and copy and paste the URL into the box.
EDIT: When you right click on the pic you want on the hosting site, left click on properties, then copy and paste that.
It's a mineral/salt block. The past couple of years I just used the white salt block and I haven't noticed any difference in the deer's preference. I get a ton of traffic at that location either way. I usually have 200+ photos in a two week period. Here's a link to my photobucket site where I've uploaded just a few of the thousands of pics I've gotten so far. http://s272.photobucket.com/albums/jj188/ohiofirelt/spring%20deer/ Last year I posted a pic of a giant single drop tine on here, if you want to scroll back a few pages on the photobucket site you'll see him.
EDIT: I'll just post it here. All of these pics were from the same spot.
Man I'm tryin' lol. The big ones only come out at night. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that he'll show during the rut. The single drop tine from last year did but I shot over him with a cross bow.
Went out this morning and this eavening. Saw 5 does early and had 2 little ones came around 5:30 and one of them bed down right out in front of me. A bigger boddied deer came at dusk in the corn and wouldn't let me down until after dark. I could hear it crunching corn that it was picking off the cob with it's teeth. It finaly walked off.
I was hoping to log on and see a big one had fallen over the weekend.
I'm planning on getting out tonight so hopefully there's some movement.
My buddy missed a stud on Sat morning at 7:30 as it was heading back to bed.
Does anyone have a scent lure they swear by? I've given Mrs. Doe Pees three years with no success so it's time to make a change. I'm looking for something "not commercial". I'd like to find a small deer operation that does their own stuff and has shown some success. I just don't trust the big operations - $11.99 for an oz special golden estros? What does a big buck just come over and stand broadside 20 yard out?
Hey that was my 100th post!!! I've gotten a lot of value learning from everyone over the past several years.
"If a man says something in the woods and no woman is there to hear, is he still wrong?"
Louie, I've not had any luck with scents, but I haven't tried too much. I've used Tinks, and oen other I don't recall. Just like calls though they might work one time in 20. I have read from other States' posts that some guys are having luck using scents on mock-scrapes and bringing deer in for their trail cams.
I got out on Saturday evening and got a decent sized doe. The shot was just under 30 yards. She locked up facing me for about 5 minutes after apparently winding me. When she turned to leave I stopped her and shot. I used Rocky Mountain Snyper 3-blade broadheads for the first time. They did a nice job.
Hey thanks wizard. I'm getting ready to go out here shortly. I've use the allan machanical broadheads at Wal-Mart for $11 for about 4 or 5 years now. I busted those 2 does at 20 yards with the same arrow. I'm now trying to get a 3rd with that same arrow. Yeeee Haaaaaaaw.
Hey Louie
The only thing I've used this year for sent is those waffers made by HS. I put out the doe estrus on the ground and I put the earth sent ones on me. The last deer that came in on me last eavening was directly down wind of me.
That's some nice bones! I hope you get a chance to get a shot off at him! It's great to see everybody back on the forum. Rackattack you've been busy filling that freezer, great job!
I have tried all kinds of scents for 30 years and I can honestly say that I think that one is not better than the other, Tinks, code blue, locally collected urine and estrous from some of our local deer farms here in the Greene county area and alot of others. I think that they at least will cover your human scent. I have had many deer come from down wind and never wind me , but most of the time they never walk right up to the scent pads either. So I don't think they hurt anything, and I am always up for trying something new. I have'nt been out yet, been working way to much. I am definitely getting out this week though. I have been getting alot of pics of some nice bucks on the trail cams. Let me see if I can load one on here.
I also use the scent wafers. Instead of hanging them on my clothes, I put them in the container where i store my clothes. It seems to work very well. I had deer all around me last night and nothing winded me. Had a 6 pointer come from straight down wind and he didn't know I was even there. I also spray down with Dead Down Wind just before walking to my stand which seems to help also. In ref to scents, I have always used tinks up until last year. I tried some black widow last year and honestly I dont know if any are even different. Seem to get the same results, sometimes they come and sometimes they dont. I truly dont think that it matters. The real key is just not getting winded or burning out your stand too early. Just my 2 cents
Does anyone have any info on the state lands around coshocton county? Specifically dillon, woodbury, powelson or tri-valley? How hard are they hunted during the rut in archery season? Any one of them see less pressure than others? Any help would be appreciated.
Hi Louie. I am new to the forum. I have bena regular "watcher/lurker" for years and have decided to register and contribute. I know a lot of guys have different opinions about scent and many have had good and bad experiences. My dad has a small deer farm and scent business in western Ohio called buckeye Scents. He has been selling scent for over 15 years and has had some incredible success stories from guys all over Ohio and the US. Scent is not magic but it can be a powerful tool to increase your odds.
My personal opinion is that if the scent is fresh and pure, you can't go wrong. However, don't use dominant buck urine if you just want to see deer. I agree with the other reply about being a great cover scent as well as an attractant. I spray my boots and lower legs with doe urine everytime I go out. You might want to check it out. Just google Buckeye Scents to find the web site.
I look forward to reading more on the forum as things heat up!
Hunt WITH your kids and you won't have to hunt FOR your kids!!
Wind was really blowing last night. Was not supposed to be blowing that hard. I could see does running around in their bedding area nearly all the way to dark. Proves the point that they do not rush out in windy conditions. An 8 pt. basket buck did walk through beans along wood line and cut right in to my tree at dark. Pulled NEW memory card in camera, hoping for more pictures of Ginormous(Have not seen since Sept). Sadley, I did not know the NEW memory card needed formatted...arggggg. NO PICS AT ALL. I did at least bait the lick again with a bushel of apples, corn, and a trophy rock. Oh, and I squirted Dominant Buck on all scrapes. He is worth every penny! Buck Decoy will be put into action this weekend. He has been around 4-5 years and looks it. He has been pile-drived, licked, humped, and kissed many times, and has the wounds to prove it. I wish carry-lite had a bigger set of antlers to put on him. I dont know if he is going to intimidate a 180+ deer.
2009-2010 Tally
Antlered deer seen under 60 yards: 26 Morning Hunts: 11, Evening Hunts: 22
Antlerless deer seen under 60 yards: 40 Average length of hunt: 2 hour and 45 minutes
Total deer seen under 60 yards: 66
OK I think I've got it now........Good to here from you jeffery. I did not make it out last night I had school until 8pm. Went yesterday morning and did not see a deer. Started raining about daybreak and continued all day. I came home around 8:30 am. It don't look like I'm going this morning because it's raining again. I don't mind a little rain but it sounds like it's not just a little rain. I have school at noon so I will try and get out this eavening. I've only used a decoy one season and thought it was to bulky to carry and manuver through the woods. The one I have is the hard plastic doe. I'm sure that they have made them more user friendly today. Good luck on getting the big buck you've been seeing.
Thanks for the info. I talked with your mom this morning - she's a nice lady. Considering the way the operation works, it seems to me it would make the most sense to order just prior to Nov 1st as the does get closer to being in heat.
I'll be putting in an order and I'm also going to try those crystals. I think that is a good way to get out a considerable amount of scent.
"If a man says something in the woods and no woman is there to hear, is he still wrong?"
Hey Louie, that is probably a good plan. Those crystals do hold the scent well and get it out on the wind. I hope you have great success. I will be out this weekend with my kids and hope we get a shot at something.
Hunt WITH your kids and you won't have to hunt FOR your kids!!
I've been itching to get some scent out so I went ahead and ordered a bottle and the crystals. The price is right and I like to use a lot of scent so I'll probably order another bottle in two weeks.
Good luck and enjoy your time with your kids. I have a 4 year old daughter and a 2 year old son. I can't wait to get them out.
"If a man says something in the woods and no woman is there to hear, is he still wrong?"
Just got onto your dads site and placed an order. The prices are very reasonable. I got the doe urine and the crystals. Hopefully it brings some luck and a couple of big boys. I will let you guys know.
i haven't seen any good bucks yet, just a few small ones. lots of does and fawns though. haven't gotten any shots yet either. just a bit out of range each time. i'll probably get out this evening.
made it out this evening saw one deer back half looked fairly good size didn't get a good look though. we need the crops off around here.

WOW!
That is a very nice deer. Congrats to him
Hey guys,
Good to see everyone back! I finally got a bear in Idaho this past spring - 400 pounds/6'11 Skull made b&c
A heck of a bear - hopefully it means my two year buck slump will end sometime in the next couple months!
Good luck to everyone.

Ohio Is that the mineral "rock" in the picture. If so I've been wondering about them.
My Lord, my Wife, my kids and whitetails, what else really matters?
Thank you sir!

Have you heard of the Edgar Winter Band ?
One of there albums is " They Only Come Out At Night "
I believe I would have to drill him. Good Luck on getting him!
