This is the place to post your observations and questions about the 2008 deer season in Quebec. If you're telling what you've seen in the woods, please point out the general area and time of those observations.
Hello to all the hunters that plan on heading into the forests, fields and farmland of the Province of Quebec to hunt Whitetail in 2008.
The Winter of 2007-2008 was a very bad one for the deer herd in all parts of the Province. The snow was record-breaking in some places and came early and stayed long into the Spring months which resulted in the reduction of the over-all deer herd, and alot of the younger does had still-born fawns.
I am located in the Laurentian Mountians to the North-East of Montreal and I have came across Wintering yard sections of forest where more than a few deer died due to the harsh Winter conditions. Alot of private landownders along with hunting and snowmobile clubs in the Province decided to help the deer in late February 2008 and provide hay to curb the mortality rate.
I have been glassing the farm fields the past few weeks, and have not been seeing the numbers of deer that we have enjoyed in the past. I would guess in some parts the numbers are down 30-50% easily.
I have only glassed a few smaller bucks and not alot of fawns this Fall. The Does that do have fawns only have one, and the number of doe family groups that seem to gather this time of the year to hit the apple trees hard do not seem to be as numerous.
On another note, I am glad to finally see some management out of the Provincial Government. They have further broken down the number of zones in the Province into different sectors with the A..B...ect areas. "Example 9A, 9B"This makes it easier to micro-manage smaller sections with special bag limits or closed seasons when needed, but what this Province really needs is at least a 3-point rule on one side of the rack for bucks. Far too many spikes and fork-horn bucks get taken each Fall and Hunters are too trigger happy, and with the intense hunting pressures in some areas a hunter will decide to shoot a small buck because he knows if he does not shoot it the buck will likely be taken by a neighbour instead.
I would be interested in knowing what the conditions are in the Southern part of the Province, close to the US Border, Zones 4, 5 and 6 if anyone has any info on them please post.

Can't tell you about the southern part of PQ, but I can tell you that New Brunswick appears to be much the same as you describe.
