My buddy put the smack down on this 17 pointer which groosed 165 6/8" two nights ago at 6:30pm...Bucks are really starting to show some rutting activity
We began these threads to give hunters a place to chart the rut's progress in a given year. Over time, however, they've turned into places for folks to post pretty much anything pertaining to whitetails in a given state/province. So there's no need to wait until the actual rut to post; feel free to contribute anything at any time.
I've got a game camera down in Southwest Kansas on a buddy's place where I hunt pheasant. He went out and checked the camera for the first time in a few months... These were NOT the pictures I expected!
I knew that he occasionally had elk on the place because I found a shed antler last year, but he seems to be sticking pretty close now!
You need to host the pictures at a photo hosting site. I use webshots and hunt101.com.
Once you do that, they pretty much all have a "share image" button that will give you the image code.
Then come to this website to post a reply, click on the "insert image" button "it looks like a postcard with mountains on it" and paste your image code in between the {img}{/img} tags "but with brackets [] instead of {}".
So it should look something like this, but with [].
Lets see if this works, I found this on my game camera here in the Wichita area this morning. I think this buck rubbed a hay bale instead of a tree trying to get his velvet off!Travis
We've seen a lot of deer in the past few days "once the monsoon passed". Also starting to see a couple of rubs pop up in historic areas.
One of the neighbor boys took a doe last night. He drew 4 times on a doe yesterday morning, but she was acting squirrely, wouldn't stand still because the wind was swirling. Last night he had one come right in to him and he got a full broadside shot at 10 yards. She didn't even go 50 yards.
Very Cool, I am going out with Sam tonite and check our stands. most were in 2-3 feet of water. May try and put Sam on one this weekend, we will see
Kelly
Sean, I always like all of the best features on a trail cam. did feel as though I wanted to get infra red. there are so many diffrent cams out there and I am not afraid to spend some money to get a good one, the best bang for the buck......no pun inteneded.
That is an absolutely massive 8 point. Good luck taking him this year. He'd look amazing on the wall.
Whitewater, I have the Moultrie i40 and I really like it. I've heard awesome things about the Scoutguard camera but have no personal experience with it. The older cuddebak's are awesome, but most manufacturers have caught up with them regarding trigger speed on the newer models. Reconyx, Leaf River and Buckeye are very good as well but much more expensive.
Don't sleep on the flash cameras. There's nothing wrong with them and sometime you can get more camera for the money if you're willing to go with the flash. That'll also get you color pictures at night. BUT if people are wandering around near your camera in the dark they will definitely be aware of your cameras presence. As a result it might grow legs and walk away...
I would avoid Wildview and Stealthcam. Slower trigger speeds and very battery intensive. Just my $0.02.
Man, you guys are NOT as excited about opening day as I am... It's only about 80 hours until season starts... I'm checking this site about 150 times a day and NONE of you guys are posting to help me with my addiction!
What Gives!?
Just to get the juices flowing, here's my last three years... "and my last one from Texas just because he's the only one on my wall".
"the one on the right is mine, but THIS is what the Kansas rut is all about! This was one day a couple of years ago."
Sean your texas deer looks like a muley with no forks. Is it?
I have not seen hardly any deer for over a month, but there is so much corn around me the the deer are living in there and not comeing out. Yesterday some farmers started cutting corn and tonight I saw about 40 deer and 6 nice bucks. Great to see with season only a few days away.
Sam and I went out a while back and trimmed from around the stands. took a while to get him out of the house, but when we got there he was extremely stoked. very ready for season and try and top last year.
He keeps saying "Ok dad, now it is your turn to get a big one"
man time has been going by to fast. all i have been doing is working and studing. been different hunting in a different location this year. i dont think i will make it back home to hunt much some im just gonna have to find some new spots. cant for the rut to roll around
Moultrie I40 and D40 is what we use, you can't go wrong for the money. Have not seen any deer where we hunt but the camera's go out this weekend. They are attacking the clover so we know they are there.
No rut news yet. Bucks are still running together. Black-powder season opened today and somebody decided to open it early. Neighbor saw a spotlighter last night after dark and heard three shots from our hay field - game warden has been out already today. A few pictures from the farm.
Sorry to here about the poachers already hope the weather cools off I can not get in the mood to hunt yet. I have several nice pic of bucks durning shooting hours around my feeder just to hot to hunt I thing the bugs would carry you off right now. batman
Zeroed out tonight. Have a bean field where we've been seeing some action just before dark but I didn't sniff a deer tonight. It was just hot and windy, windy, windy. I guess I should thank my lucky stars that the wind kept the mosquitoes away.
Sam and I went out Sunday, It was good just to be in the woods. Not a lot of activity "windy and warm" but I did have a family of racoons just about plop down in my lap.. they were not real happy when they finally saw me. great amount of activity tracks around one of my best stands....a nice set of split-toe tracks with deep dew claw dots. The pond to my south is very full which has really accented my choke point. need to get a cam set up. the moultrie I-40 seems to be a good camera as well as the scoutguard. May try sitting some this weekend . still too warm to let them hang very long so I am not super twitchy.
Well went home and checked things out. Cams showed a huge ramp up of activity the past 10 or so days... I was very pleased with all of my plots. Most had about 4 inches of growth, some more. All were planted 14 days ago. I have an "observation" stand that I sat in Sund eve and didn't see much. "2 small does" My father, sitting in a large brushpile, had a really nice 9 and two smaller bucks walk by him on the way to some ponds. As the mornings are cooler than normal and the eve's are still getting into the 80's, I'm actually seeing alot more activity in the mornings. Usually its vice versa for early season. O and also had 2 bucks on cam still in velvet... Unfortunately I'm out of commission until Oct 22nd or so due to class/test schedules.
With that said I almost need to change my sign in name as I bought a new Mathews DXT last Friday. It's a bad dude... We set up a chrono and with my hunting set up it shot 305... I would like to ask anyone that has one a question though. The top string suppressor has the string "miss" it at times, resulting in a loud shot. I'd say about 1 in 20 times it does it. It's almost as though the suppressor is set up slightly too far away from the string. Well that's all I've got for now, as is I've been typing this during medical biochemistry lecture.. With that
Glad to hear about the morning movement. I usually don't hunt a lot of mornings this time of year because movement seems better in the evening, but with the temps/wind being the way they are and as cool and calm as its been in the mornings I was wondering if the movement was better early.
I may try to hunt in the morning when theres supposed to be a light drizzle and little wind.
Terrific observation, but it's not One-Eye. This buck has 2 good eyes - 1st pic. I went back to check a flash pic of him this year to confirm his good eye and also checked his facial features and leg coloration vs. One-Eye. I've been watching this buck for 2 years and this is the first sign that he might be related to One-Eye.
One-Eye lost his eye in November 2005. I had to do a double take when I saw that picture with the start of the drop tine on the right beam tip and a split G-2 on the right side - just what One-Eye had 2 years ago. 2nd pic is One-Eye from January 2007 and 3rd is from last October. Any coments on how they may be related - same father, is One-Eye his father?
Related or not "my vote would be "related"" both of those deer have a lot of character.
I made it back out tonight and it was hot, hot, hot. Took me close to 20 minutes to stop sweating once I got out of the stand. Did see a nice young 8 around 7:15 this evening. That's my first deer sighting of the year "from the stand at least". Just a 2 1/2 year old if I had to guess. Maybe 115"?
Too dark down in the bottoms to get a decent photo or video.
Just good to see a deer again during legal season.
Hey I hope I am not too late to help but I have been using the Moultrie 5.0 infrared camera and it has been really good for me and my family we this is our 2nd year using and we have not had any problems. I think one will run you about $199. Pictures are crystal clear.
By the way, I just registered today and I am new to the message board. I look forward to the season and the info we all can share and help eachother out. Good luck to all! I love the exitement that a fresh season brings!!!
Season if finally here, just waiting for the temps to drop a couple of degrees before going out, very anxious to get out there, It seems like I have been checking this forum 30 times a day. On an interesting note, In early august in southwest kansas while watching 2 nice bucks from a distance I saw the largest chase a doe and mount! I couldnt believe what I saw as to it was early and the temps were in the 90's, could this be because she didnt breed during the season or is this occurance more normal than I thought? I wish you all the best of luck and remember safety!
Hey Fellas - got something to share that may get the juices flowing! I would like to say these are my pics, but they are not.........I have to hand it to my good friend and hunting buddy. He went out last night for a little drive and scored big! Put a 250 yard stalk on this deer and shot him at 35 yards. Wasn't sure of the hit, let him lay last night and found him this morning. He hasn't scored him yet, but I'll let you know when he does. First time to ever spot and stalk a mule deer..........I guess I'd rather be lucky than good any day:" I am going to head out this weekend and hopefully let the air out of a good one "despite predictions of 90 degree weather". I figure you can't kill em sittin on the couch! Happy Hunting!
That is just awesome! I want to head out west and hunt muleys soo bad. That may just have to happen in November if I haven't tagged a whitetail by then.
I zeroed out again tonight. I sat near a field edge and a buddy sat way down in the bottoms. He saw 4 does and a nice buck moving towards the field. But based on the time he saw 'em they wouldn't have made the field until 10-15 minutes after dark. They just seem to be moving out a little late with the warm weather. Maybe next week will shift that a little with the cool front moving in.
Well I took my bow in yesterday due to the string suppressor problems and found out the riser was warped.. Not alot, but enough to keep the string from catching the suppressor correctly at the top. The dealer had never had anything like that before so they took my bow and shipped it to Mathews.. Now I'm really stuck sitting around waiting on a new bow to get here and re-sight. I guess I should just be glad it didn't happen during mid-season...
Cams are still showing good/better than average movement in the mornings.. " up to 9 am on one field" So I'd really suggest a morning hunt to those that can stand it right now. I'm going to TRY and hold out until the 23 or so of Oct.
Sucks about the bow, but Mathews has really good customer service. I bet they get it back to you pretty pronto. Maybe it was a blessing in disguise. It's been so blasted hot I haven't seen much movement and now you've got extra time to study!!
I hoped to hunt yesterday morning but I woke up to 30+mph winds and driving rain so I turned off the alarm and rolled back over. 1.2" in less than 2 hours. ...not that we really need it right now.
Im with you Bowtech, all the action I have been getting on my food plot and cuddeback have been mostly in the am. Holding off till Saturday early morning. I will post some pictures that I have gotten this year so far. Had a narly looking buck come in yesterday around 6:50 am. Good luck to all.
Yea it's been so hot I went dove hunting last night. The misquitos were terrible! I was covered in bug spray and still spent the who evening swatting I have been wanting to get out and shoot a doe but there is no way I could sit still in a stand for several hours. I might try a ground blind this weekend.
Give the ThermaCell a try. It's the only thing I've found that not only keeps mosquitoes from biting but also keeps them far enough away from you that their buzzing isn't an annoyance. I've not found the odor to be a problem in deer hunting, and it definitely allows me to keep from moving while I'm on stand.
Hey guys Ive been reading the rut report for two seasons now. Decided I wanted to get in on the action. I hunt in kansas and Missouri. I have been seeing lots of deer. I got a doe in missouri last weekend and I've had one encounter with a decint buck so far this year. I'm going out tonight and tomorrow so we will see what happens.
I also wanted to bring up a topic I have been wondering a lot about. What is everyones opinion on morning hunting vs. evening hunting? Last year I hunted a lot of mornings but it didn't pay off as much as I hoped it would. I like evenings because you don't spook deer, but I have noticed better deer movement in the mornings... Modified by Backstrap at 10:58 AM 9/26/2008
Okay, going out tomorrow for first time. Some pictures from last year showing some of the activity I had then. This year so far has not produced as many pictures just one decent one so far. The first Buck I missed clean guess that is how it goes.
Well, I can be the first to post I suppose, but I bring absolutely no 2008 "Rut News" to the table.
Moved the camera again. Had about 100 pictures in a 5 day span. All does again though this particular nook seems to have a lot of twins.
Peek-A-Boo!
...and a shot from our dove hunting foray on Monday. Not too many birds, but man my dog is bad !

Hey Sean, that is so cool! I live in Dodge City and I know there are some wild elk that are seen time to time around here.
WOOOHOO it is time again. help me out here, both my trail cams are toast and I need to get another one....suggestions?
Thanks
Kelly
More details? Price range? Quality of photo you want? Infrared or flash?
Can somebody tell me how to post pictures on here? I've got a really neat picture I would like to post. Thanks,Travis

Good luck to everyone tomorrow! I won't be able to hunt until at least tomorrow afternoon, but I hope everyone is safe in the morning!

i would def say they are related. their racks are pretty close. size is about the other dif in them
Related or not "my vote would be "related"" both of those deer have a lot of character.
