Now that the rut in Kansas is only about a month away, let's get a 2007 thread going. Please let us know which part of the state you're hunting and what kind of deer activity or sign you're finding. Be sure to check back often to see what your fellow whitetail hunters are seeing in the woods . . . and good luck!
Because Kansas is one of our most popular state rut threads, I figured I'd just bring this one to the top, so you guys can find it faster.
Thanks, we are all looking forward to it! Does anyone have any predictions for this years rut at this time?
Man it was so scattered last year its hard to say. My best guesstimate is the 12th-16th of Nov. to be in the woods.. I'm looking forward to this weekend. I'm going home to Independence and plan on finding a full game camera card, then hunt all day Saturday and Sunday "during the rain". I'll post any good pics I get and updates on Saturday most likely. CAN'T WAIT!!

I posted these on the 2006 rut report but i figured since the 2007 is out now not many people will be looking on the 2006 anymore

a few pictures from earlier this year of some of the survivors from last year. I've seen a few of them since - it should be a good year - can't wait.
Nice group of deer. Looks like you'll have your pick of what you can take this year.
Saw a nice little 8 tonight. Probably 100-110", no more. Still so stinking hot I'm not seeing much movement until 7:00 pm or later. Took a doe on Wednesday morning when our temps dipped into the upper 40s. Glad I took advantage of it, doesn't look like we'll be getting much more for a bit.
Starting to see a big increase in rubs. I saw 10 or 12 today that weren't there this time last week. One or two false scrapes. No licking branch or anything.
Off to bed so I can get up again in the morning. Best of luck to those of you getting out this weekend!
Two more doe and a buttload of turkey this morning. It was hot, hot, hot. 75 when I woke up at 4:15 this morning.
Just not much moving right now, but I was lucky enough to watch this little doe for about 45 minutes. Just a munchin' away on acorns.
Darn cute little thing.
Ya my dad is hunting in Northeastern Ok right now and he's seeing the same thing. We are hunting my blind in the morning then moving to some secluded oaks for the evening hunt and Sun...

Have been in the woods 3 times now. Lots of does and some small bucks. I passed on a 120-125 inch deer this morning. Bigger than anything I have shot to date, but we have 7 or 8 P&Y deer on camera and as of last night a heavy bodied buck with a lot of mass, but the camera flash was not quite bright enough to accuratly judge him. I would say really close to a B&C. I had a buddy that had a chance at a 140-150 inch 8 point. Quarting towards him so he didn't take the shot. To warm for a risky shot. I am headed back out tonight. Good to see that the 07 rut report is up and running.
I have two weeks of vacation scheduled for Nov 5 - 19. Can't wait. Man do we need some cooler weather.
I predict the rut to fall Nov7-11,good luck. How many chigger bites are you all gettin. Next week will be cooler, and pay attention to the early buck sign, some big bucks are taken unsuspected in this early prerut.
Don't know if anyone is going to the 2006 thread anymore, so I wanted to be sure and thank 'huntin_pete' for pointing out that my deer from last year was in Petersen's Bowhunting this month.
I'd have missed it if it wasn't for him! Thanks Pete!
I am going to try to post a couple of pix of a nice 11 point and some other deer we have got on camera in the last couple weeks. Hope you guys can see them. I set the camera a little closer this week to try to get a better picture due to the flash being a big POS...

Any predictions as to when those magical 3-4 days where the big boys drop there guards will be this year? What makes you think so?

I'm speechless. Went out morning and evening on Sat and all day long on Sund and saw absolutely nothing. I did hear a doe blow at about 5 am on Sund morning, still too dark to see, but sounded like she was about 100 yards away... We moved into a ridge that runs perpendicular to a river and sat up in the oaks there and nada. Acorns dropping by the tons, tracks everywhere, but came up completely empty....
How many of you guys do the ground hunting?? "sitting at the base of a bigger tree" I'm thinking about trying out some spots I didn't have time to scout, but I'd have to ground hunt them...

Just got on this thread to see if you knew your deer was in Petersen's bowhunting this month. Congrats.

Checked cams yesterday.....LeafRiver had about 20 pics of does and fawns...CuddyBack shot 85 pic...............of sky. Had setup poorly. The Cuddyback directions were a booger to understand! Will be a great cam, when I learn to use it. Do you have to do anything for it to shoot day and night pics? I have the one you could buy for 299..Flash version. They cut the beans next to us this week...Love the cool weather, Nice Buck! Pics!!My guess for the perfect days......coldest days from Oct 31 -- Nov 8......Full moon Oct 26
We've seen a trickle of movement, but certainly not the number of deer we're used to seeing.
A few does here, a few does there... Not many bucks. ...and certainly none of the deer we watched in the fields in August/September. Go figure, eh?
Does anyone predict that we there will be more movement this weekend with a slight drop in temperature especially the early morning?

I plan on hunting Thurs morning and evening hard due to that drop.. I think in SEK we are supposed to have a high of 67 and a low of 42 on Thurs. Acorns in the morning and food plots in the evening...

I'll be in a tree in south central kansas all weekend. Look for an update Monday.
Brad
Saw a little more movement tonight. Even watched a weaned button buck try to nurse for about 20 minutes. She kept kicking him and biting him. It was hilarious!
Just new to the forum. I live in Shawnee and will be hunting Louisburg tonight and Emporia this weekend. I'll let you guys know Monday how it's shaping up.
Scott
PS- how do you post images?

Hello everyone this is my first post and have really enjoyed the forum the past 2 years..thanks for getting a 2007 forum started. I hunt in southern harvey county on a quarter section that belongs to my brother and is only 3 miles from home and only a mile detour on my way home from work. nothing like sitting in the stand a couple hours to take the edge off the day. activity still appears to be what I call routine and have sighns of a heavy buck in the area...split toe print with heavy dew marks. My real goal this year is for my 11 yr old son to get his first deer with a bow....he is pumped.
I am going to go out some this weekend and will post my results.

Boys and girls, I saw THE deer this morning. He's not as huge as some of the deer you folks see, but he's one that I wouldn't hesitate to take at first light of opening morning knowing that it would essentially end my season. Heavy, heavy, heavy 9. Probably 7-8" brows and 12-14" G2s. ...and really dark horns which is a fetish of mine.
He worked his way across and about 70 yards north of my stand. I got to watch him for about 15 minutes as he cruised across, freshened a rub and then faded out of sight. He never knew I was there, so a slight tweak in my set-up and the right wind and we may be in business.
Cross your fingers.
"Oh, and WAY increased movement this morning. 3 of us saw about 20 deer including another pretty nice young buck, maybe 110's."

what kind of setup are you hunting while its early in the season? This weekend will be my first out this year, just wandering what kind of setup everyone has been using.
Look for food sources. Acorns, soybeans, corn...
I had 16 does filter under my stand and into a soybean field this evening. The buck I saw this morning was in deep timber feeding on acorns on his way to a soybean field.
This morning was a bust, squirrel hunters ended up around me shooting left and right. Ya hunting timber next to soy bean fields are my favorite. This year alot of my farmer friends planted corn and now have winter wheat. Try again tommorrow
I am set right in the timber with soybean fields in front and a slow flowing creak behind me, I am ready to get into the woods and hopefully see some deer if weather cooperates. Will post again on monday with a little luck will have good news at least see some deer!
I drove around this morning with the kid. Wasn't able to hunt because my wife is working, but I did see a bachelor group on the beans. Kind of surprised the bucks are still together. It was a nice 130-140 class deer. But the other two were really small. Just wondering if he is trying to loose them but they just keep tagging along. Also, checked the camera late this morning and found that the batteries were dead and had 2 pictures one of a small buck and the other of my face in disgust when I read a number 2 on the picture ticker. I will be out Sat and Sun. Look forward to new posts on what everyone is seeing.
saw 7 bucks 0 does friday night, had a big bruiser 10 point guessing around 170-180 class standing 20 yards from me never was broadside a younger buck leading the group gave perfect broadside then backed out, it was a heartbreaking day. Didnt get a chance to hunt the rest of the weekend because of weather. Looking forward to next weekend. The bucks were starting to spar a little and saw some early in the afternoon around 2. Hopefully will get another crack at it. Good luck this weekend!
Well on Fri I kicked up a beautiful 12 right behind my freakin barn when I was headed out to get some hay... I have plans for him next weekend. I also had this guy show up on cam on Saturday evening...

Well, "THE" Deer that I talked about last Thursday caught an arrow on Friday evening. Unfortunately I was at a wedding, so it wasn't from me. But it was a good buddy of mine, so I'm happy for him.
Looks like a beautiful 9 point, is that correct? Any idea of a score on him?
Impressive deer. I had a shot at a 135 class deer on Sat evening but let him walk. Kinda kicking myself now. Showed up well before dark. About 6:15 in fact. He was alone and the does are starting to act a little skiddish. Don't know if that is wishfull thinking or if there might be a little pre-rut activity... Anyone else see anything that is showing signs of pre-rut? I was just glad to see that the bucks have split up. Or at least it seems like it.
Sean 98, That sure is a nice deer, tell your buddy congrats. My brother is up in MO right now visiting our family and helping with harvest, he said that they've been jumping a few out of the corn and bean fields. Seeing that deer makes me even more anxious for Nov. to come so I can get up their to hunt.
Since he shot the deer you found, do you have him out spotting a big one for you?
ksbowtech have you gotten any pics from your new moultrie IR cam? How do you like it? Does it take color daytime pics?
Modified by GhostInTheGrass at 8:07 PM 10/14/2007
Every day above ground is a good day.

nice buck, i live on the gulf coast, mississippi, will be traveling to hoisington, ks at the beginning of november to hunt whitetail, love reading these forums about you guys living in the mid-west, really gets the blood flowing, good luck
ya that pic is actually from the new IR cam. It takes beautiful color pics in the daytime, I just can't get any deer on it during daylight, well except for the occasional doe in early morning. The only problem I've had at all is right at dusk when it can't decide to use the flash or not. I fixed it by putting it on a 3 pic series so that atleast one comes out right. I really like the cam so far. Funny thing is, the deer still know the cam is there. It's weird. I can tell they see it, but they bigger bucks don't seem as skiddish around it. I'll post some daytime pics this following weekend when I go home, and hopefully one of that big buck I busted...

Sean - very nice buck by your buddy - tell him congratulations. Is that still some velvet this late?
Found my first field scrape a week ago checking fence. Also saw a set of very big tracks along a bean field. Have been too busy with fall chores to go sit on a stand but I'm seeing a lot of deer from the house. All bucks except the yearling bucks have kept away from the house this year summer/fall until this weekend. Had 3 bucks show up in the yard Saturday morning after 7:30 mixed with some does and fawns which didn't seem too put out by them. Then had another 8-10 does and fawns come through. The 2 older bucks opened a scrape in the front yard and used licking branchs on 2 different trees. One of them sparred with a 1.5 year old buck for quite a while.
This morning I had 4 bucks in the yard right before dawn and they left before it was light enough for pictures. After they left I saw 8 or 9 does and fawns before 7:45 and another very small buck down the pasture. Did see any chasing except the smallest buck which was trying to check out the younger does and they wanted no part of him. I'm getting some pictures of some older bucks on the trail camera now. Beans are being cut and wheat drilled. Deer are also on the acorns right now pretty heavy.
Here's a couple of pictures from Saturday morning.
Congradulations on a very nice bow kill. Hunters will be heading to there stands, now where is that frost?
Farmerbt1, Great pictures right there. Brought back some memories seeing those. Hope you have a great season this year. And, hope all Kansas hunters have a great year as well. I can't wait to get back out there in the future. Kansas rocks!!!
Did you have a wetter summer this year?
Dean Weimer
Yep, big heavy 9 point. With a little velvet still on the right side. I've seen one other deer still in velvet this year too "which I think of as odd". That one is a hugely tall 6. I mean ridiculous tall. I think something may be off with him because he's fully mature, only a 6 and still in velvet in October...
I really don't have an idea what the deer scores yet. I haven't seen him with my own eyes "except the one time I saw him alive" but I'll be sliding over this afternoon to pay him a visit. "and maybe punch my buddy in the groin."
Was out Sunday morning. Read in NAW where a guy killed a big buck last year in early-mid Oct by using a doe bleat. Thought what the heck so I gave a few doe bleats and followed up with a buck growl just to see what would happen. About 5 minutes later I had 5 small bucks and about a 125 class deer come in right under me. If I would have stepped off my platform I would have landed 1 of 3 different deer depending on which way I went. I know it seems early for calling like that but it sure seemed to work or else it was quite a coincidence. Next time maybe one of the big boys will come by instead. Good luck.
I am new to the form I have been out 4 times this year not much deer movement during the day light hours have seen several hen turkeys and young ones. I have some good pictures on my trail camrea if anyone could help me out on how to place them on the web page???????
